Assignment/Brief
Design and develop an intuitive wayfinding system for NKU Steely Library that transforms the confusing book-finding process into an engaging, user-friendly experience. The project requires creating a comprehensive solution including interactive kiosks, directional signage, and a digital interface featuring Stego, a dinosaur mascot guide. The system must serve both new and returning students, simplify navigation through the complex library layout, and reduce frustration while maintaining accessibility for all users.
Concept
The concept centers on "Guided Discovery" - transforming library navigation from a solitary expedition into a guided adventure. By pairing intuitive wayfinding elements with Stego, a friendly dinosaur mascot who serves as a virtual companion, the system creates an experience that balances efficiency with playfulness.
The design approach uses a consistent visual language across physical and digital touchpoints to create clear pathways through the library's complex layout.
The system incorporates color-coding for different sections, simplified iconography, and step-by-step guidance that builds user confidence. Interactive kiosks serve as home bases where students can begin their journey, with Stego providing personalized directions and encouragement. The overall aesthetic is warm and welcoming, using rounded forms and conversational language to reduce the institutional feel typically associated with academic libraries.
